Why Networks Can Make You Rich

When I was young I remembered always being curious of networks. My first encounter with networks was television, later came the radio.

Being young,  I remembered asking questions such as, who owns television networks?  or who controls radio stations? Of course you might have guessed no one around me knew the answers to these questions, so I took it upon my self to research their answers.

Today being older, we have new forms of networks. To name a few, there’s social networks, search engine networks, and even game networks. The difference between today and yesterday is who control these vehicles. Yesterday was the rich, today it’s just about anyone. In the information age the rich no longer control all the networks that run the world. Today, most networks that service us are being built by average day people, which means, for the first time in history, leverage is accessible to anyone. Below are networks built by regular people who understood its leverage and power.
Because of these brave individuals the world is more connected than ever before.

                                              youtube

The world’s most powerful video sharing website YouTube was created by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawes Karim. Notice the word “You” in YouTube, the sites goal was not about its creators, the sites goal was to target you. YouTube plays by the new rules of money. YouTube founders Chad, Steve and Jawes knew the rules of money has changed. For those of you who don’t understand the rules here is one. “HE WHO CONTROLS THE PEOPLE CONTROLS THE WEALTH.”  Youtube has over 100 million subscribers. Which is a no brainer why Google bought them out for $1.65 billion. Whether Google overpaid for YouTube or not, is not the question that should be asked here. The real question that should be asked is,  how much people do you control?

Of course by now, the whole world probably know Facebook. If you don’t know Facebook by now, where have you been? On February 2004, Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg launched its famous website. What started out as a private site for college students later became an open source to millions. Today Facebook is worth billions of dollars. Some of you may wonder, why? As I stated before, the rules of money has changed when it comes to building wealth.

In the information age its how many people you control, and how long they remain loyal to you that determine your wealth. Although Zuckerberg wasn’t a business major in college, he’s no idiot to money. Zuckerberg along with partners Sean Parker (founder of Napster), and Peter Thiel (founder of PayPal) understood the golden rule when it came to business. This simple rule allowed them to leverage technology to increase their wealth.

Rule #2 is: “HE WHO CONTROLS THE PEOPLE, ALSO ATTRACTS THE ADVERTISERS. In business, advertisers just want to be where ever there’s plenty of people. You don’t have to be a college grad to know that. It’s really, common sense. The point is, Facebook understood this and capitalize by making its system free to use.  So if you worry daily about money, its best  to ask you’re self what system do you possess that advertisers would huddle to pay for?

Twitter created by Jack Dorsey and launch July 2006 also used the new rules of money in their system. Twitter noticing people addiction to texting created a system where people could send and receive updated text from friends, news, and celebrities all on one network via tweeting. Twitter became successful because they got celebrities involve in their system. With that being in place, people could keep up to date with their favorite stars, friends, and brands becoming addicted to its network every minute of the hour. When twitter became popular it sparked the attention of business marketers. Marketers studied twitters user’s interest, and used its data to better market to their consumers. Today twitter controls over 175 million users world-wide. Not bad for an online texting network huh.

The point is, the world has changed. The world we live in today is different from yesterday. Today if you build a network for the masses and be generous, you can obtain great wealth. This is one of the reasons why I shake my head when I hear people say “If you want to make more money, you have to get a degree.” Obviously, their  still stuck in the industrial age because today people getting richer younger  leveraging technology.

I also get disturb when I meet people who think everything is about them. To better clarify my point here an example. I have a friend who’s currently building a website. Excited she came to me and said “I’m building a website.” “Really” I replied. She said “Yes, I hope it makes me a lot of money.” “What’s the sites mission, and who are you targeting” I asked. “Well my clients, I’m a hair stylist, and plus I need to make more money so I decided to build a website”. Do you think it will make money? “Maybe” I replied then added to the conversation “you’re site should not be about your needs but the needs of others. If you want to gain greater success build for people.” Scratching her head I knew she didn’t understand, so I showed her a case study I did on the world most successful entrepreneurs. After reviewing the details closely she got the idea on what she needed to do.

I once had a mentor who told me something I kept with me all my life. He said “One of the ultimate reasons why people struggle with success is because they believe life is all about them. But in actually it’s the opposite way around.” For years this remained in my thoughts since we spoke. Today when I look at how Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter made it possible for us to communicate with no cost, his message makes sense now then it did back then.

What he was trying to say was, if I wanted to be successful I have to do what the rich does, I have to serve people. One of the key to success is leveraging people. Networks can help you achieved that if you have the right system in place. Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube used this strategy, so can you. The key to building a good network is to find what has not been done yet in the world, or what is ultimate wrong with the networks that already exist. What ever network you choose to build should ultimately serve masses of people if you want it to be notice. That is the key.
